Brown Scores Career-High 32 Points in Akron's 70-64 Setback to WMU

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) totaled a career-best 32 points, but Akron women's basketball team fell to Western Michigan, 70-64, at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 5).
Brown added a career-high 19 rebounds and a season-best five steals to her 32-point game to lead the Zips (9-14, 3-8). Senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) helped out with 16 points and seven rebounds and freshman Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) chipped in with eight points.
Brown pulled down nine offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 13 second-chance points.
Akron forced 18 Western Michigan turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brown's five steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
It was a back-and-forth opening quarter before a late scoring run propelled Western Michigan to an 18-14 edge over Akron after the first period.
Akron then cut the Broncos lead to 22-19 before going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a three from junior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio), to take a 29-22 lead. The Broncos then came roaring back to take a 34-31 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, Akron cut its deficit to 42-40 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Brown, to grab a 45-42 lead with 2:17 to go in the third. Western Michigan responded to seize a 47-45 lead entering the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Akron could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 70-64. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
