Akron Falls 85-59 to No. 6/8 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -Â The University Akron women's basketball team got a 13-point, five-assist and four-rebound performance from freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.), but fell 85-59 to No. 6/8 Michigan on the road Saturday (Dec. 13) at Crisler Center.
Brew's effort allowed the Zips to score the second-highest scoring output against the Wolverines this season. while sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) and senior Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland) tacked on nine and eight points, respectively, to go along with junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) adding seven points and two steals.
Akron forced 14 Michigan turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. McGuff's two steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
Akron struggled out of the gate, but battled back to trail 23-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines were able to extend their advantage in the second quarter and took a 48-30 lead into the intermission.
Michigan built a 67-37 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Callaway, to trim its deficit to 67-42 with 2:14 to go in the third. The Zips continued to reduce the Michigan lead, shrinking it to 70-46 by the end of the third quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Michigan kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 85-53 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Callaway's three with 1:04 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 13 points.
