Mobley Leads Three Zips in Double Figures as Akron Falls at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Zips scored in double figures led by 16 points from senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.), but the University of Akron women's basketball team fell to league-leading Ball State, 80-57, on the road on Saturday (Jan. 18).
Mobley led the Zips (9-9, 3-3) with 16 points and two steals. Junior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio) was dialed in from beyond the arc adding 14 points off the bench, including four three pointers, while redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) chipped in with 13 points.
The Akron offense made eight threes in the contest.
Akron did a great job disrupting Ball State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Junior Liisa Taponen's (Tampere, Finland) two rejections led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-2, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 3:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from senior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.), to tie the game at nine. Ball State then pulled ahead, sending the Zips into the second quarter down 13-9.
The Zips were outscored in the second quarter by 11 and faced a 39-24 halftime deficit.
The Cardinals continued to extend their lead after halftime as the Zips faced a 62-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Akron knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Akron narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 80-57. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
