Softball Scheduled for Weekend Series at Bowling Green

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips softball team will head on the road for a weekend series against the Bowling Green Falcons. The Zips will hit the diamond after having their doubleheader against Buffalo cancelled on Tuesday due to weather.
What's Ahead
Akron and Bowling Green will play a total of three games over the next two days. Saturday will feature a doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 1:00 pm and the second to follow at about 3:30 pm. Sunday will conclude the series with a single game with first pitch at noon. Bowling Green is 4-20 on the season with a 1-7 mark in conference play. On Tuesday at Miami, the Falcons got shutout 10-0 and 9-0 in a doubleheader. In game one, Mackenzie Krafcik allowed just two hits through four innings and four hits in the first five frames but then the RedHawks broke the game open in the sixth. Aaralyn Nogay drew 2 walks on the day to bring her season total to seven. Reagan Williamson leads the season campaign for the Falcons offensively with 17 hits and 2 home runs. In the circle, Emma Denison has a team-best 5.32 ERA and has struck out 14 batters. Taylor Turner had pitched 50.1 innings this season while striking out 20 opponents and has recorded the only Falcon save.

The Falcons lead the series 59-31-1, however Akron swept the series last year 10-2, 7-1, and 11-1 at home. Hayley Croyle struck out a total of 11 batters in the course of two appearances last year. Meagan Lee closed the series going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Brooke Sivek added a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored.

Meagan Lee leads the Zips offensively as they have earned a 14-18 overall record and a 5-4 record in the MAC. Lee comes into the game with a .431 batting average with 47 hits. Sophia Wygast has gone the yard six times this year and has a team high 20 RBI including one on Saturday March 30 at Western Michigan. Brooke Sivek has drawn 17 walks and has stolen 17 bases on 18 attempts. The Zips trio of Haley Croyle, Macy Walters, and Cailey Joyce have combined for a majority of the pitching duties. All three have an ERA under 4.1 while each striking out more than 30 opponents each.

- The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 31 years after joining the league in 1993 from the North Star Conference.
- Under second-year head coach Craig Nicholson, the Zips return 10 players from the 2023 squad and added 12 newcomers to the 2024 roster.
- The 2023 season marks the 48th season of intercollegiate competition for the Akron softball program.
