Softball to Host Miami for MAC Weekend Series

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron softball team will return to Mid-American Conference competition as they host Miami for a weekend series at Lee R. Jackson Field.
What's Ahead
The Zips will host the top team in the MAC as the RedHawks come to Akron for a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series at noon on Sunday. Fans can follow all the games with live stats through the Akron Athletics App or on GoZips.com. Saturday's doubleheader will be available to watch on ESPN+.

The Miami RedHawks are receiving votes in the latest DI softball rankings as they bring a 29-6 overall record, including a perfect 11-0 mark against conference opponents, and a 16-game win streak in this weekend. Jenna Golembiewski is batting .459, for the 8th best mark in DI softball while leading her team to the fifth best team batting average in the country (.357). Golembieski and Karli Spaid are currently ranked 1-2 in home runs this season in the country, while Spaid is currently at 90 career home runs to be tied 6th in NCAA history. As a team, the RedHawks have outscored opponents 321-151 this season, while they have the top five players with the most runs scored in the MAC, each above 38 runs scored.

Akron is coming off a doubleheader sweep against Dayton on Wednesday with scores of 1-0 and 8-4. Macy Walters threw a complete game, three-hit shutout in game one while only walking two and striking out eight. She leads the Zips in the circle with a 3.27 ERA, allowing only 82 hits and striking out 46 opponents. Meagan Lee is second in the MAC in batting average with her .415. She has a conference-high 56 hits while also having the second highest number of steals (13) on the team. Sophia Wygast has a team-high 7 home runs and 26 RBI while Brooke Sivek has drawn a team-high 22 walks (4th in the MAC) and stolen 21 bases on 22 attempts, a second best mark in the conference.

- The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 31 years after joining the league in 1993 from the North Star Conference.
- Under second-year head coach Craig Nicholson, the Zips return 10 players from the 2023 squad and added 12 newcomers to the 2024 roster.
- The 2023 season marks the 48th season of intercollegiate competition for the Akron softball program.
