DAYTON, Ohio – Akron swept a non-conference twinbill against Dayton by scores of 1-0 and 8-4 at UD Softball Stadium on Wednesday.

GAME 1 | Akron 1, Dayton 0
Freshman Macy Walters was dealing on Wednesday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Akron Zips over the Dayton Flyers 1-0.

Walters (5-5) went the distance for Akron (17-20), giving up three hits, walking two and striking out eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips took the lead for good in the sixth, scoring for the first and only time in the inning. Akron got an RBI single from junior Autumn Bailey, scoring senior Tiffany Stevens from second base.

Akron took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to an 8-4 win against the Dayton to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Freshman Mallory Herwerden (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (18-20). The right-hander went 1.2 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Senior Cailey Joyce also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering two runs, zero earned, on two hits, walking none and striking out two.

Offensively, the Zips were led by freshman Katie Cantrell, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI. Senior Tiffany Stevens furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI. Freshman Sophia Wygast also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Meagan Lee came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.

The Flyers failed to push any runs across before the Zips offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Akron offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Cantrell, which brought the Zips lead to 6-0.

Dayton narrowed Akron's lead to 6-2 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the sixth inning.

The Flyers gained ground, closing the gap to 7-4 until Akron added some insurance in the seventh. Freshman Delaney Jenkinson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Zips, bringing the score to 8-4 in favor of Akron. The score remained 8-4 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.

The Zips will host the MAC leading Miami Redhawks for a weekend #MACtion series. The schedule was altered. On Saturday, April 13, the Zips will play a doubleheader against the RedHawks with the first pitch thrown at 1 p.m. followed by a 3:30 p.m. game two start. The series finale will now be played on Sunday, April 14 at Noon.
