Zips Could Not Hold Off Broncos Comeback

KALAMAZOO, Mich. --The Akron Zips took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 3-2 to the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday.
Five Zips scattered one hit each as junior Alexis Campbell and freshman Sophia Wygast drove runs across the plate, while Campbell and sophomore Meagan Lee scored runs. Sophomore Brooke Sivek and freshman Lily Sullivan also recorded hits for Akron.
Senior Cailey Joyce (5-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (14-18, 5-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Akron scored twice, with one run coming across on freshman Sophia Wygast's single. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Western Michigan scored three times over the remaining six innings to grab the 3-2 win.
GAME NOTES
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed two runs across.
» Akron pitchers faced 29 Western Michigan hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out one.
» Junior Alexis Campbell led the Zips at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
ON DECK
The Zips play five league games next week, starting with a home doubleheader against Buffalo on Tuesday, April 2 (1 and 3:30 p.m.) at Lee R. Jackson Field. Akron will then travel to play Bowling Green in a weekend showdown against the Falcons on April 6-7 with a doubleheader on Saturday (1 and 3:30 p.m.) and the series finale on Sunday (1 p.m.).
