AKRON, Ohio – Sparked by a trio of three-goal performances from senior Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), sophomore Kellen Fletcher (Valencia, Pa.) and freshman Sienna Hinchcliffe (Rochester, N.Y.), the University of Akron lacrosse team earned a 15-12 triumph past St. Bonaventure in the home opener for the Zips on Wednesday (Feb. 14) at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.
The win marked the first coaching victory for head coach Elaine Jones on the Akron sideline.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Zips jumped out to a 3-0 advantage on the strength of goals from Boyd, sophomore Macy Vail (Joppatowne, Md.) and junior Jaelyn Clinkscales (Rochester, N.Y.) at the 9:54, 9:28 and 8:55 marks, respectively.
• Sophomore Heather Carey (Williamsville, N.Y.) added a goal at the 3:31 mark of the opening quarter to give Akron a 4-2 lead after one period.
• The Zips netted four of the first five goals in the second period with Hinchcliffe (14:14 | 6:47), Boyd (7:30) and Fletcher (4:45) finding the back of the net as Akron held an 8-5 advantage at halftime.
• The Zips registered goals in the third quarter from Hinchcliffe (14:21), Boyd (13:27), Fletcher (10:11), Clinkscales (8:35), Vail (5:48) and senior Jacqueline Glassey (Kildeer, Ill.) (3:51) to assume a 14-7 margin entering the fourth quarter.
• In the final stanza, Fletcher capped the scoring for Akron with a tally at the 12:53 mark.
• Junior Hannah Sanders (Massillon, Ohio) equaled a season-best total for saves with 11.
GAME NOTES:
• Six different Zips collected assists in the match with Clinkscales, Hinchcliffe, Boyd, Carey, Glassey and Vail recording three, two, one, one, one and one assist, respectively.
• Fletcher and Boyd directed the Zips with a team-high five shots, with four on goal.
