Akron Battles Massachusetts for MAC Tournament Championship

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron lacrosse team will vie for the Mid-American Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament berth on Saturday (May 2) as the second-seeded Zips battle top-seeded Massachusetts at 12 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.
FIVE ZIPS GARNER ALL-MAC ACCOLADES:
Akron garnered a program-record five All-Mid-American Conference selections when the league unveiled its 2026 award winners in a vote of the league coaches released on Wednesday (April 29).
Junior Sienna Hinchcliffe (Rochester, N.Y.) capped a brilliant regular season campaign with her selection as the league's Attacker of the Year. Senior Katie Baumer (Rochester, N.Y.) culminated her stellar season being honored as the MAC Midfielder of the Year.
The duo headlined the Zips' award winners as the pair was selected as First-Team All-MAC honorees. Pulling in Second-Team All-MAC laurels were seniors Sarah Baumer (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kellen Fletcher (Valencia, Pa.). Additionally, freshman Sienna Hinchcliffe (Rochester, N.Y.) was named to the MAC All-Freshman team.
POSTSEASON HISTORY:
The Zips are making their second straight championship game appearance when the squad battles Massachusetts on Saturday (May 2). Akron is 3-1 all-time in postseason play, including 3-0 in the MAC Tournament.
POSTSEASON STATISTICS:
Fifteen Zips have earned playing time in postseason during their Akron careers, including five making their tournament debuts versus Eastern Michigan (April 30). Sienna Hinchcliffe, Katie Baumer, Kellen Fletcher, senior Heather Carey (Williamsville, N.Y.), junior Kaitlyn Sikorski (Plymouth, Minn.) and sophomore Avery Wallace (Eden Prairie, Minn.) have recorded 10, nine, three, two, one and one goals, respectively, for the Zips. Additionally, redshirt freshman GK Adrianna Califano (Bellmore, N.Y.) has pulled in 10 saves for the Zips.
FIVE ZIPS HONORED ON SENIOR DAY:
Akron recognized five Zips on Senior Day prior to the squad's match with Youngstown State on April 18. The group of Katie Baumer, Sarah Baumer, Heather Carey, Dani Dahl (Fairfax, Va.) and Kellen Fletcher donned the Blue and White one final time at home when Akron hosted the Penguins.
ZIPS NAME TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2026:
The Akron senior duo of Katie Baumer and Sarah Baumer will serve as the Zips' captains for the 2026 campaign.
SCOUTING AKRON:
Sienna Hinchcliffe leads the Zips in goals (74), points (101), shots (154), shots on goal (109), while ranking third in ground balls (29), third in draw controls (50) and fifth in caused turnovers (13). Katie Baumer is second on the team in goals (41). Kellen Fletcher paces the squad in assists (33), while Kaitlyn Sikorski ranks fourth with 20. Heather Carey ranks third on the squad in goals netting 32. Goalkeeper Adrianna Califano has registered 95 saves, 32 ground balls and owns an 8.76 goals against average.
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS:
Akron is meeting Massachusetts for the second time in program history. The Minutewomen are 15-2 on the campaign, including posting a 7-0 mark in the Mid-American Conference, following an 13-5 triumph over Robert Morris on Thursday (April 30). Redshirt senior Kassidy Morris owns team-high totals in goals (67), points (97), shots (140) and shots on goal (100), while ranking second in assists (30). Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Bayley Duffy has collected 120 saves and 46 ground balls, respectively, en route to posting 7.48 goals against average. Massachusetts is led by fourth-year head coach Jana Drummond, who owns an 59-14 ledger as a head coach for the Minutewomen.

Sienna Hinchcliffe turned a dominate individual six-goal performance, but Massachusetts garnered an all-round team effort to post an 18-10 triumph over the Zips in a battle of Mid-American Conference lacrosse unbeaten teams on April 4 in Amherst, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• One of the leading contenders for MAC Player of the Year honors, Hinchcliffe registered six goals on the strength of a career-high 12 shots, including nine on goal. She also contributed five draw controls, two caused turnovers and one ground ball for the Zips.
• Akron netted 10 goals in the match, a mark that equaled the combined total of the first three league opponents for Massachusetts.
• Katie Baumer added a pair of goals for Akron, while netting one tally apiece was Kellen Fletcher and Kaitlyn Sikorski.

Picked to finish last in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Zips overcame a five-goal second-half deficit to force and overtime and set the stage for Clinkscales' game-winning goal in overtime.
