Akron Falls 81-67 to Arkansas State

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team garnered a career-high 22-point performance from junior Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio), while junior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds, but fell 81-67 to Arkansas State in the MAC-SBC Challenge at James A. Rhodes Arena on Saturday (Feb. 10).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led Woods, while freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ontario) tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds and Mobley added seven points and 17 rebounds.
Akron collected 45 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Arkansas State's 26. The Zips also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 23 rebounds into 17 second-chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-10, Akron went on an 8-0 run with 2:53 left in the first quarter to take an 18-16 lead. The Zips entered the quarter break with a 19-18 advantage. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.
The Zips could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 46-33.
Akron's deficit grew after halftime as the Zips faced a 66-49 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Akron kept the Red Wolves from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 75-63 with 1:54 to go in the contest. Arkansas State responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 81-67. Akron took advantage of three Arkansas State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
