Akron Drops 72-68 Decision at Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, TENN. - The University of Akron women's basketball team dropped a 72-68 non-conference decision at Tennessee State on Friday (Nov. 22).
The Zips (2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by junior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio), who had a career-high 15-point and six-rebound performance. Senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 14 points off of the bench and junior Kam'Ren Rhodes (Chandler, Ariz.) chipped in as well with 11 points.
Akron out-rebounded Tennessee State 41-39 in Friday's game, paced by eight boards from redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.). The Zips also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second-chance points.
Akron forced 15 Tennessee State turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Junior Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio) led the way individually with one steal.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-6, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 2:53 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 13. Tennessee State then sent the Zips into the second quarter down, 15-13. The Zips trailed 37-29 at the halftime intermission.
Tennessee State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-29 advantage before Akron went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from junior Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland), to trim its deficit to 39-37 with 8:18 to go in the third. The Tigers countered and stretched their lead to 57-50 heading into the fourth. Akron took advantage of four Tennessee State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Tennessee State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 60-51 advantage before Akron went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Vejsicky's three, to seize a 61-60 lead with 5:15 to go in the contest. Tennessee State re-asserted control, outscoring the Zips 12-7 the rest of the way to secure a 72-68 victory.
