Akron Drops MAC Opener at Ohio, 67-58

ATHENS, Ohio - A second-half rally lifted Ohio past the University of Akron women's basketball team, 67-58, in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools on Wednesday (Jan. 3).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by a 17-point and 17-rebound performance from junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio). Junior Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio) added 13 points and three steals off the bench, while redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) contributed nine points and two blocks.
Akron out-rebounded Ohio, 41-31, led by Bass' 17 boards. The Zips also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second-chance points.
Akron's defense held Ohio to only 39.3 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
Trailing 13-11, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 4:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Woods, to take a 16-13 lead. Ohio responded to tie things up at 20-20 heading into the second quarter. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 20 points close to the basket.
Ohio took a 22-20 lead before Akron responding by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Woods, to take a 27-22 advantage. The Bobcats cut into that lead, but the Zips still enjoyed a 35-32 margin entering halftime.
Akron continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bass, to expand its advantage further to 41-34 with 7:06 to go in the third. Ohio responded to seize a 50-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Akron could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 67-58. Akron pulled down five offensive rebounds to score two second chance points out of 12 total in the period
