KENT, OHIO – The Akron Zips fell 23-3 to rival Kent State in the first game of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge series on Friday evening at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.

Akron scattered five hits, as sophomore OF Ian Pennington led the squad with a pair hits followed by one each from junior OF Jack Firestone and junior OF Jack Poist.

Akron plated their first run in the top of the seventh, with an RBI double by junior IF Breydan Cavey scoring junior IF Kaito Hara who got on base from a walk. Cavey advanced to third on a Kent State throwing error.

Akron's final two runs of the game came in the 9th inning when Hara launched the ball down the left field line, scoring two runners. Pennington and Firestone added a stolen base each.

Kent State stuck first plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Flashes added runs in the bottom of the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, scattering 18 hits.

Akron returns to Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium tomorrow for game 2 of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel series. First pitch is slated for 3 PM.
