BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Akron softball team dropped a pair of contests on the opening day of the Hilltopper Spring Fling hosted by Western Kentucky as Austin Peay bested the Zips, 7-1, before the host Hilltoppers edged Akron, 3-2.

"In game one we made too many mistakes to stay in the game against a good team," Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "In game two, I thought we really competed against a very good Western Kentucky team. We had opportunities and never got the key hit, but we were solid defensively and got a really good outing in the circle."

The Governors opened the scoring with a pair of tallies in the top of the first inning before the Zips responded with a run in their half of the frame. A two-out single to right field plated freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) to drive in the Zips' tally in the affair.

Austin Peay added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and three in its final at-bat to account for the 7-1 final.

Sivek led the Zips' offensive attack with a 2-for-4 contest.

In the nightcap, the Hilltoppers struck for a single tally in the third inning before adding a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

Campbell delivered a bases-loaded RBI fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning to cut Akron's deficit to 3-1. Redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) followed with an RBI groundout in the seventh to account for the 3-2 final.

Junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Zips' offensive efforts in the game, while freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) fanned three in a complete-game effort in the circle.
