BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Akron softball team garnered a split of its games on the final day of the Hilltopper Spring Fling hosted by Western Kentucky on Sunday, March 5.

The Zips opened the day triumphing over Evansville, 5-0, before dropping a 5-0 decision to Western Kentucky.

"I thought we really competed hard today" Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We got two well-pitched ball games and our defense was pretty good all day. We let the second one slip away late against a really good Western Kentucky team, but we take away a lot of positives in the way we played today."

A one-out groundout in the top of the third inning against the Purple Aces from sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) plated redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) to give the Zips all the runs they ultimately needed in the victory.

A fielding error in the fourth inning scored redshirt junior Jaiden Bryant (Toledo, Ohio) to extend Akron's advantage to 2-0.

A bases-loaded RBI groundout from freshman Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas) in the seventh inning pushed the Zips' lead to 3-0 before freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) collected a pair of RBI with a single up the middle.

Freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) tossed a complete game en route to striking out eight batters.

The Zips were limited to three hits in the nightcap en route to Western Kentucky earning a 5-0 decision.

Freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) went 2-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore Autumn Bailey (Ashland, Ohio) added a pinch-hit single in the fifth inning.
