Akron Sweeps Doubleheader against Bowling Green, Atkins Hurls Complete Game

AKRON, Ohio – Akron swept a doubleheader against Bowling Green on Friday by scores of 5-4 and 3-1 as the Zips received stellar performances on the mound, including a complete game effort by junior starting pitcher Spencer Atkins (Sylvania, Ohio).
Atkins threw six innings without relinquishing a hit and finished the game only allowing two hits for one run with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Junior Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the game one starting pitcher, limited the Falcons (3-12, 1-4 MAC) to a pair of hits, permitting two earned runs with four strikeouts in six innings, while relief pitcher Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio) earned the win. Gillies did not allow a hit in three innings of work.
The Zips (7-10, 3-2 MAC) scattered 14 hits on the day led by senior IF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) on a 4-of-7 effort with one run scored. Junior IF Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas), sophomore OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) and junior OF Jack Poist (Hoover, Ala.) added two hits each.
In game one, Akron established an early led, scoring two runs in the second inning. The Zips manufactured the pair of runs as Arrivo and Poist delivered back-to-back base hits to right field. Arrivo advanced to third base, and Bowman laid down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to push the first run across the plate. Sophomore 1B Ty Stolarski (Medina, Ohio) followed with a double to right center to give Akron a 2-0 advantage.
Bowling Green captured the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring 3 runs on one hit and an Akron fielding error. The Falcons added a run in the sixth inning for a 4-2 advantage.
In the eighth inning, the Zips loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Hara, junior OF Jack Firestone (Zionsville, Ind.) and sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio). Seeker also registered a base hit with an RBI, while Arrivo launced a sacrifice flyout to tie the game 4-4. In the ninth, Zips won on a wild pitch as junior DJ Butler (Chicago, Ill.) scored the game winner, pinch running for Stolarski who walked.
Zips scattered eight hits as Poist went 2-of-2 with a double, a pair of walks and a run scored. Stolarski registered an RBI doubled, while Arrivo, Seeker and Bowman each recorded an RBI.
In game two, Akron plated three runs in the second inning on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Seeker started the rally with a single to right field. Poist and Bowman walked, while Stolarski was struck by a pitch before sophomore C Andrew Horvath (Aurora, Ohio)
unleashed an RBI single to left field for a 3-0 Akron lead.
The Falcons plated a run in the sixth inning on two hits to cut the Zips lead to 3-1, but Atkins continued to be resilient and did not allow a hit for the rest of the game.
