Falcons Avoid Series Sweep with Extra-Inning Decision
March 19 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green needed extra-innings to avoid the series sweep against Akron at Skeeles Field this weekend as the Falcons claimed a 5-4 win in the series finale on Sunday.
The Zips scattered seven hits delivered by six different players as junior 3B Max Bowman (Gahanna, Ohio) led Akron with a 2-of-3 effort with a run scored and a walk. Junior OF Jack Poist (Hoover, Ala.), sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) and junior IF Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) pushed runs across the plate. Poist had two RBI and Pennington and Hara each had one.
Akron (7-11, 3-3 MAC) started the scoring in the first inning as Hara walked and scored on a base hit up the middle by Pennington. The Zips held the 1-0 advantage until the top of the third inning when the Falcons scored a pair of unearned runs for a 2-1 lead.
The Zips answered in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits as sophomore OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) started the rally with a single through the right side of the infield. Next, senior IF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced on a balk by the BGSU pitcher. With runners in scoring position, Poist launched a bases-clearing single to centerfield. Bowman followed with a base hit, but the Zips couldn't push anymore runs across the plate, 3-2.
Bowling Green (4-12, 2-4 MAC) tied the game in the sixth with a solo homerun to left field by Tyler Ross. Akron stranded two runners in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, BGSU established a 4-3 advantage with a two-out base hit to right center with a runner on second base.
Bowman led-off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to left field, and Horvath sent a perfectly placed hit-and-run to right center field to place runners at the corners. Hara tied the game 3-3, grounding out to the shortstop to force extra innings.
The Falcons scored in the extra frame with a base hit to left that rolled to the fence for two extra bases. With one out and runner on third, a ground ball to second base broke the stalemate and gave BGSU a 5-4 advantage.
For the series, Arrivo led the Zips' offense with a 5-of-10 performance with an RBI and two runs scored.
