Second-Half Rally Propels Western Michigan Past Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A second-half rally proved too much for the University of Akron women's basketball team to overcome as Western Michigan (10-11, 5-5 MAC) rallied to post a 76-71 triumph past the Zips (14-7, 5-5 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Akron was directed by a career-high 23 points from senior G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.), including going 7-for-8 from beyond the arc. Her seven three pointers rank as the No. 4 single-game performance in program history. Sophomore Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) matched Martindale with a team-high 23 points, while pulling down a career-best 13 rebounds for the second consecutive game.
The Zips finished the affair shooting 46.2 percent from the field, while connecting on a season-high 58.8 percent of their attempts from distance, 10-17.
Western Michigan overcame an eight-point halftime deficit on the strength of shooting 55.2 percent from the field in the second half and a .508 mark for the game.
The Zips and Broncos battled back-and-forth all afternoon as the tilt featured nine ties and 10 lead changes before Western Michigan went ahead to stay with basket with 3:07 left the game.
Akron registered a 35-26 advantage in rebounding, including a 26-20 edge on the defensive glass.
