CHATTANOOGA, TENN. -Â The University of Akron softball team earned a split of its games in final day action at the Frost Classic on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Â
The Zips (6-3) dropped a 9-5 decision to Southeast Missouri State before garnering a 2-1 victory in nine innings past Chattanooga.
Â
"It was good to see us bounce back in game two after a tough first game" Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We were a little sloppy defensively early in game one but kept competing. In game two, our defense was solid and we got a well-pitched game and some timely hitting."
Â
The Zips opened the scoring against the Mocs in the top of the first inning as freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) scored on a throwing error.
Â
Akron held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning when Chattanooga tied the game at one.
Â
The Zips scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Â
After the Mocs got a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning, freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) retired the final two batters to earn the win after 4.2 innings of relief.
Â
Collecting two hits apiece against Chattanooga was Sivek and redshirt junior Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio).
Â
In the opener, the Zips started the scoring against Southeast Missouri State as redshirt junior Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
Â
Southeast Missouri State responded with five runs in the second and one more in the fourth before redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) connected on her first home run of the season, a solo blast, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
The Redhawks tacked on a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to assume an 9-2 edge. A two-out throwing error in the bottom of the sixth plated two more runs for Akron before an RBI fielder's choice in the Zips' final at-bat by Stevens accounted for the 9-5 final score.
