Akron's Rally Comes Up Short as Wichita State Edges Zips, 63-61

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - University of Akron junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) secured a double-double with a 22-point and 13-rebound performance, but the Zips' late rally came up just short as Wichita State earned a 63-61 victory on Friday (Nov. 24).
In addition to Bass' strong outing, the Zips were led by sophomore Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio), who had 12 points and three blocks, and by junior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.), who added 10 points and six rebounds.
Akron shared the ball well in Friday's game, racking up 15 assists on 23 made field goals. Individually, junior Kaia Woods (Tiffin, Ohio) led the way for the Zips with four assists and redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) also added three assists of her own.
Akron forced 17 Wichita State turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Bass' three steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
Akron was slow out of the gate to start the game, falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and faced a 34-19 halftime deficit.
Akron and Wichita State both put up 11 points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 45-30 entering the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 11 points in the paint.
Akron opened the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run, finished off by Bass' layup, to cut its deficit to five, 46-41, with 6:30 to go in the contest. The Zips continued to chip away at the margin getting to within four on four occasions before the Shockers sealed the final 63-61 margin at the free throw line. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 31 points in the paint.
