Zips Fall in Series Opener to Miami

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron Zips softball team (17-28, 12-12 MAC) dropped its series opener to Miami, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.

The RedHawks had a big second inning, scoring five runs to put Miami ahead, 5-0. Akron was able to plate a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio).

Miami added to its lead by scoring a run in the fifth inning and sixth inning of RBI singles that put the RedHawks ahead, 7-1.

Akron plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh with RBI singles from Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio) and Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio), but the comeback fell short as the RedHawks secured the 7-3 victory.

Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) suffered the loss after going 1.1 innings and gibing up five runs on six hits. Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) pitched 5.2 innings giving up two runs, and striking out five batters.

The Zips will close out the series on Saturday, April 30 with a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. Prior to game one, Akron will honor its two seniors, Petrof and Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.). The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
