Zips Fall to Rivals in Wagon Wheel Challenge Game

KENT, Ohio- The Akron softball team (17-27, 12-11 MAC) fell to rival Kent State in the series finale on Tuesday afternoon, 5-2. Kent State took the series as well as earned a full point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Akron took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) hit an RBI single to left field that scored Carley Auten (Pickerington, Ohio). A solo homer from Kent State in the fourth evened the score at 1-1.

The Flashes took a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning off a grand slam. Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) homered to right field in the seventh inning that made it 5-2, but the Zips' comeback efforts came up short.

Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa) suffered the loss after going 5.1 innings giving up five runs on four hits. She struck out five batters.

Akron will close out the home portion of the season this weekend as the Zips host Miami on Friday and Saturday. The Zips and RedHawks will kick off the series on Friday, April 29 at 3 p.m. The series will wrap up on Saturday, April 30 with a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
