BUIS CREEK, N.C.- The Akron Zips softball team (2-11) split on the second day of the Campbell Invitational with a 2-1 win over Cleveland State, followed by a 7-2 loss to Iona.

GM 1: Akron 2, Cleveland State 1
The Zips got on the board first scoring a pair of runs in the first inning to jump to a 2-0 lead. Freshman Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) drove in the first run after she singled to center to drive in Molly McChesney (Verona Wisc.). Campbell then stole second advancing runners to allow Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio) to score.

The Vikings answered back in the third inning to make it a 2-1 game, but Akron was able to hang on for the 2-1 victory.

Junior pitcher Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) put in seven innings of work and gets the win. She gave up one run on three hits while striking out six batters.

GM 2: Akron 2, Iona 7
Iona played two runs in the opening inning, but Akron matched the Gaels by scoring two runs in the first.
After a fielding error put McChesney in scoring position, sophomore Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) singled to left field and drove in Cirone and McChesney to tie the game at 2-2.

Iona re-took the lead in the second inning and then extended its lead by adding a pair of runs in the fourth that made it 5-2. The Gaels added a solo run in the fifth and the seventh that secured the 7-2 win over the Zips.

Sophomore pitcher Sheridon Wilber (Rock Creek, Ohio) gets the loss after pitching six innings. She gave up five runs on four hits and recorded one strikeout.

Akron closes out the tournament with Campbell on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
