Zips to Compete in Campbell Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips softball team will travel to Buis Creek, N.C. to compete in the Campbell Invitational March 4-6 as the Zips will face Cleveland State, Iona, and Campbell.
GAME INFORMATION
Akron enters its 45th season of intercollegiate competition in 2022. Under the direction of third-year head coach Meaggan Pettipiece, the Zips return 18 players from the Zips' 2021 squad and have added eight newcomers to the 2022 roster.
The Zips finished last season with an 8-46 overall record and 7-33 in conference play.
Akron returns two of their top-four hitter from a year ago in sophomore OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) who led the offensive exploits last season batting a team-best .260 on the strength of team-high marks in hits (26), runs (17) and stolen bases (15), while ranking second in triples (1). Sophomore Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) led the team with nine doubles, while sophomore Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) owned a team-best six home runs.
The Zips return a A trio of Akron pitchers have tossed 50 or more innings in the circle, including 98.1, 87.1 and 84.2innings, respectively, from sophomore P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio), senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) and redshirt junior Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.). Stefanoni, Petrof and Otani earned 101, 59 and 47 strikeouts, respectively.
Joining the roster in 2022 are eight newcomers; freshman OF Leea Ibarra (Findlay, Ohio), OF Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio), INF Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.), OF Autumn Bailey (Ashland, Ohio), P Emily Farlin (Stanton, Calif.), INF McKenzie Cornwell (Amherst, Ohio), C/OF Megan Cotton (Sammamish, Wash.), and P Elizabeth Frederick (Williamsburg, Pa.).
LAST TIME OUT
The Zips compete in the Clemson Classic last weekend and went 0-4 against Saint Francis, Boston, and No. 14 Clemson. Cirone led the tournament with two runs batted in, while Kalli Macintosh-Houlder (Mississauga, Ont.) had three hits.
Petrof and Otani saw a combined total of 6.2 innings of work. Petrof finished the tournament with five strikeouts, while Otani added seven strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE TOURNEMENT
The tournament hosts Campbell stand 6-6 overall after completing the Camel Stampede with a 3-1 record featuring wins over Howard, Kent State and Marshall. Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot picked up her second Big South pitcher of the week honors after throwing two complete game shutouts in the Camel Stampede last weekend.
Cleveland State stands 4-9 overall after going 0-4 at the Wings ETC Classic. Melissa Holzopfel leads the team with 18 hits, eight runs, and a .391 batting average. She has also pitched in nine games and holds a 5.73 ERA.
Iona stands 0-4 overall after falling to Presbyterian, George Mason, and Furman in the Furman University Tournament. Natalia Meray leads Iona with three hits and an RBI, while Hannah Collins has a pair of hits. Kara Zazzaro has pitched 13 innings and holds a 3.23 ERA.
NEXT UP
Akron will travel to Nashville, Tenn. March 11-13 as the Zips compete in the Belmont Invite. Akron will face Bradley, Belmont and the University of North Alabama.
