Zips Softball Travels to Robert Morris on Tuesday for Doubleheader

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron softball team will travel to Robert Morris on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

Akron enters its 45th season of intercollegiate competition in 2022. The Zips return 18 players from the Zips' 2021 squad and have added eight newcomers to the 2022 roster.

Akron returns  two of their top-four hitter from a year ago in sophomore OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) who led the offensive exploits last season batting a team-best .260 on the strength of team-high marks in hits (26), runs (17) and stolen bases (15), while ranking second in triples (1). Sophomore Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) led the team with nine doubles, while sophomore Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) owned a team-best six home runs.

The Zips return a A trio of Akron pitchers have tossed 50 or more innings in the circle, including 98.1, 87.1 and 84.2innings, respectively, from sophomore P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio), senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) and redshirt junior Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.). Stefanoni, Petrof and Otani earned 101, 59 and 47 strikeouts, respectively.

Joining the roster in 2022 are eight newcomers; freshman OF Leea Ibarra (Findlay, Ohio), OF Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio), INF Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.), OF Autumn Bailey (Ashland, Ohio), P  Emily Farlin (Stanton, Calif.), INF McKenzie Cornwell (Amherst, Ohio), C/OF Megan Cotton (Sammamish, Wash.), and P Elizabeth Frederick (Williamsburg, Pa.).

Akron stands 4-16 overall and 1-2 in MAC play after going 1-2 in a weekend series against Central Michigan. The Zips opened the series with an 8-2 win on Saturday, and dropped two on Sunday with a 7-5 setback, followed by an 8-0 loss.

McChesney leads the Zips' bats with a .340 batting average and three RBI. DeVoe paces the team with three home runs, two of which she hit over the weekend against CMU.

Petrof has pitched 40.1 innings and holds a 4.86 ERA while striking out 38 batters.

SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS
Robert Morris stands 14-7 overall and 3-0 in league play after earning a three-game sweep over Detroit Mercy last week. The Colonials racked up 28 runs in the three-game series by producing a team slash line of .373/.397/.609, collecting a whopping 18 extra base hits, including 13 doubles. Koutsogiani, fifth-year Taylor Rhinehart and Grover each finished 2-for-5 Sunday, with Koutsogiani and Grover each scoring a run and driving in another. Rhinehart earned the victory from the circle in relief of Garner, improving to 5-1 (.833) overall on the year. So far this season Rhinehart has held opponents to a .164 batting average, which tops the Horizon League. Thanks to Sunday's win, the Colonials improved to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2017 as well as 3-0 in 2022 when heading to extra innings.
Matheny leads the Colonials with a .391 batting average, while Rhinehart has a team-high 32 RBI. Koutsogiani leads the team 19 stolen bases.
In the circle, Vatakis has pitched 38.1 innings and holds a 4.20 ERA while striking out31 batters.
