YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- The Akron Zips softball team (3-16) split its doubleheader with Youngstown State with a 6-2 loss in the opener, before closing out the day with an 8-4 victory over the Penguins on Tuesday night.

GM 1: Akron 2, YSU 6
The Zips got on the board first taking a 2-0 lead after scoring runs in the second in third inning. Sophomore Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) drove in a run off a single to left field in the second inning before sophomore Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) singled to centerfield that drove in the Zips' second run.

YSU had a three-run third inning that put the Penguins in the lead, before plating two runs in the fourth and a run in the sixth to secure the 6-2 victory.

Lexie Petrof (Ligionier, Pa.) suffered the loss after three innings of work and giving up five runs on six hits.

GM 2: Akron 8, YSU 4
Akron answered first again, taking a 1-0 lead in the first to start the game after Stevens recorded her second RBI of the series. The Zips had a huge second inning scoring three runs that put Akron ahead, 4-0. The Zips were able to capitalize on a Youngstown State error in the second inning and recorded three hits that came from Shelby Fortune (Grafton, Ohio), Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio), and Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio) that scored runs.

YSU answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second before the Zips plated a duo of runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. In the sixth inning Kalli Macintosh-Houlder (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a two-RBI double that extended the Zips lead to 8-2.

The Penguins scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but their efforts were not enough as the Zips held on for the 8-4 victory.

Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) gets the win after putting in four innings of work and only giving uo two runs on five hits.

The Zips will host their first home game of the season in its MAC opener with Central Michigan. The series begins on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 with the first game starting at 1 p.m., followed by 3 p.m.
