Akron Softball to Compete in Bruin Classic

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron Zips softball team (2-12) will travel to Nashville, Tenn. as the Zips compete in the Belmont Bruin Classic March 11 and 13. The Zips will face Bradley and Belmont University.

SCOUTING AKRON
Akron enters its 45th season of intercollegiate competition in 2022. The Zips return 18 players from the Zips' 2021 squad and have added eight newcomers to the 2022 roster.

The Zips finished last season with an 8-46 overall record and 7-33 in conference play.

Akron returns  two of their top-four hitter from a year ago in sophomore OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) who led the offensive exploits last season batting a team-best .260 on the strength of team-high marks in hits (26), runs (17) and stolen bases (15), while ranking second in triples (1). Sophomore Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) led the team with nine doubles, while sophomore Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) owned a team-best six home runs.

The Zips return a A trio of Akron pitchers have tossed 50 or more innings in the circle, including 98.1, 87.1 and 84.2innings, respectively, from sophomore P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio), senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) and redshirt junior Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.). Stefanoni, Petrof and Otani earned 101, 59 and 47 strikeouts, respectively.

Joining the roster in 2022 are eight newcomers; freshman OF Leea Ibarra (Findlay, Ohio), OF Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio), INF Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.), OF Autumn Bailey (Ashland, Ohio), P  Emily Farlin (Stanton, Calif.), INF McKenzie Cornwell (Amherst, Ohio), C/OF Megan Cotton (Sammamish, Wash.), and P Elizabeth Frederick (Williamsburg, Pa.).

LAST TIME OUT
The Zips competed in the Campbell Invite last weekend where Akron saw its first win of the season against Cleveland State with a 12-9 victory in the tournament opener. Akron fell to Campbell and followed up with another win over Cleveland State (2-1) before falling in tournament finale to Iona.

McChesney leads the Zips with 14 hits and scoring eight runs. Campbell leads the team batting in four runs, while Cirone, Stevens, and Macintosh-Houlder each have three runs batted in.

Petrof has pitched 29 innings for the Zips giving up 25 runs on 30 hits while striking out 23 batters.

SCOUTING BRADLEY
Bradley stands 10-9 overall after going 3-2 last weekend at the Mizzou Classic. Freshman Abbott Badgley has appeared in Bradley's starting lineup in 10 consecutive games and 14 times this season. She currently leads the Braves with a .364 average and has homered in three of the last six contests. Bradley is second in the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring, averaging 4.89 runs per game to rank 91st nationally through games of March 8. Excluding the three games against nationally ranked teams this season, the Braves have averaged 5.69 runs per contest with a .286 average.

SCOUTING BELMONT
Belmont stand 6-7 overall and has claimed victories over Memphis, Boston College, Longwood, and Arkansas Pine Bluff. Baie Ensio leads the Bruins in stolen bases (7) ranking 55th nationally. The Bruins rank second in the OVC Â for on base percentage (.393) and have secured 63 runs with 42 RBI and 100 hits.
