Zips Come up Short on Final Day of Clemson Classic

CLEMSON, S.C.- The Akron Zips softball team (0-9) fell short on the final day of the Clemson Classic as the Zips dropped a 10-5 decision to No.14 Clemson before falling 6-0 to Saint Francis to close out the tournament.

GM 1: AKR 5, Clemson 10
Clemson started hot out of the gate putting up five runs in the first inning, followed by a solo run in the second to put the Tigers ahead, 6-0.

Akron had a huge fifth inning trimming Clemson's lead to 6-5 as the Zips capitalized on good base running and an error. The inning was highlighted by freshman OF Angela Cirone (Louisville, Ohio) tripled to right center, driving in two runs. Sophomore OF Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) closed out the inning with a single down the third base line that drove in Cirone.

The No. 14 Tigers scored four more runs in the sixth inning to complete the 10-5 victory over Akron.

Junior P Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) gets the loss after giving up six runs on four hits on 1.2 innings.

GM 2: Akron 0, Saint Francis 6
Saint Francis got on the board first scoring a run in the first inning. Saint Francis added a pair of runs in the third inning followed by three runs in the fourth to give them a 6-0 lead.

The Zips only hit of the game came from OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wisc.) in the seventh inning from reaching on a bunt.

Junior Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) pitched 2.2 innings giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out three batters, while Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) pitched 2.1 innings and struck out two batters.

Akron will compete in the Campbell Invitational March 4-6 as the Zips head down to Buies Creek, N.C. The Zips will face Cleveland State, Campbell, and Iona during the tournament.
