Nashville, Tenn. – The Akron Zips baseball team secured the first win of the season on the road against Lipscomb, as Akron scored two runs in the 7th and 8th innings for a 6-5 win at Dugan Field on Sunday.
Â
Akron scattered 10 hits as freshman SS Cameron Benson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) registered his third multiple hit performance in as many games. Benson registered a 2-for-4 performance with a walk and a run scored in the Zips (1-2) win. For the series, he posted a .462 batting average (6-for-13) with six hits, including a homerun, double and four singles with five RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
Â
Junior 1B Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio) and freshman Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) also added two hits each in Akron's triumph. Cavey went 2-for-2 from the plate with a pair of sacrifice bunts, a RBI and run scored. Sprockett scored three of the Zips' six runs while handing out two singles and a sacrifice.
Â
Sprockett scored Akron's first run in the top of the third after leading off with a single to center field. Benson followed with a single and graduate student LF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) plated sprocket with a single to third base.
Â
Lipscomb (2-1) tied the game (1-1) in the bottom of the fourth, but the Zips retaliated with a run in top of the fifth as Benson's infield RBI single scored Sprockett, who reached on an error.
Â
The Bisons tied the game again and the Zips crossed the plate twice in the seventh to reclaim the lead, 4-2. Senior 3B Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) walked to open the inning and Cavey followed with a single to center field. Both, Reinhart and Cavey scored on wild pitches.
Â
Lipscomb plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but once again Akron was relentless, scoring two more runs in the eighth as Reinhart and Sprockett each scored. Cavey and senior 2B Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) delivered back-to-back RBI singles as Cavey's went through the right side and Wargo singled to left field.
Â
Akron sophomore relief pitcher Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win, while freshman Sean Perkins (Cambridge, Ohio) recoded the save. Perkins hurled two innings hit-less and scoreless innings and froze the tying run at third and winning run at second in the bottom of the ninth inning. Starting pitcher sophomore Anthony Fett (Orchard Lake, Mich.) threw 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Â
The Zips are scheduled to be back in action next weekend, traveling to Athens, Ga. to battle the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 25-27.
