Akron Rallies Past Youngstown State, 61-44
November 18 | Women's Basketball
BOXSCORE
AKRON, Ohio - Behind a dominant stretch spanning the course of the second and third quarters, the Akron women's basketball team came from behind to defeat visiting Youngstown State (1-2), 61-44, in a non-league showdown on Friday, Nov. 18 at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Â
Akron (2-1) dominated the second and third quarters thanks to its defense, outscoring the Penguins, 40-10, to power their way to its second win of the season.
Â
Redshirt junior G Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) paced a balanced Akron offensive attack with a team-high 15 points. Senior G Dominique Camp (Dayton, Ohio) added 15 with four steals, while freshman F Faith Stinson (Thornville, Ohio) chipped in with a career-high nine points and five rebounds in the win. But it was the defense that stole the show, helping the Zips overcome a slow start.
Â
The Zips finished the contest connecting on 42.9 percent of their attempts from the field, including making seven triples. Akron tallied 10 steals, seven blocks and 11 points in transition and held the visitors to 31.1-percent shooting mark, including 1-of-20 from beyond the arc, and forced 19 turnovers.
Â
The surging Zips took their first lead of the evening on a conventional three-point play by Camp in the opening minute of the second half, claiming a 26-24 edge. From there, continued stellar defense helped build the lead to 16, 46-30, by the end of the third quarter as fast-break points fueled the Akron attack on the offensive end.
Â
Akron started slowly on the evening but shook off the Penguins' best shot and wiped out a 20-3 first-quarter deficit to one point, 24-23, in the final minute of the half with a 20-4 run spanning the first and second periods. Farrell (eight points) and Stinson (six) led the burst, with Stinson draining a pair of three-pointers and Camp capping it off with a steal and layup.
Â
With the rally, Akron took the momentum to the locker room as it held Youngstown State to 2-of-12 shooting in the second frame. The bench came up big for the Zips before the break, posting 10 points behind Stinson and junior G Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario).
Â
Senior F Lilly Ritz led Youngstown State with 23 points and was the only player in double figures for the Penguins.
