Kent, Ohio – The Akron Zips spilt the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge doubleheader against Kent State at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium as the Zips claimed the opening game 2-1 and fell 10-2 in the mid-evening affair on Saturday.

The Zips received another stellar performance by junior starting pitcher Conor Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) as he earned the complete game one win. Steinbaugh (3-2) limited the Golden Flashes to five hits and one run in seven innings of work. He recorded five strikeouts and relinquished his first base on balls of the season.

Junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) led the Zips offense with a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI. Senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) added a solo homerun performance for and RBI and run scored, while freshman Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) registered the Zips fourth hit and scored Akron's first run in the fourth inning. Shellenbarger delivered the single to right field. The run tied the game as Kent opened with a run in the first inning and was held scoreless. In the sixth inning, Regan blasted the tenth pitch of the inning over the left field wall, scoring what proved to be the game-winner.

In the second game, Akron scored two runs in the first inning, but Kent State tied the game in the bottom frame and crossed the plate eight additional times for a 10-2 win. Junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) opened the game for Akron with a single to center field and Regan followed with an RBI single to the same location. Junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) added a single and, after a Golden Flashes error, Regan scored.  Junior Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) doubled in the second inning  and Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) singled in the sixth.

The final game of the series has been moved to Monday, May 10 at Kent State's Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
