Kent, Ohio – With the fourth game of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge series being postponed on Sunday, Akron and Kent State finished the series on Monday afternoon as the Golden Flashes posted an 8-3 win at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.

With the 3-1 series win, the Golden Flashes earned one point for the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge. Kent State (22-21, 15-13 MAC) currently leads 7.5-6.0 with a half point still remaining in softball.

Akron (11-31, 5-27 MAC) scattered nine hits, including a two-run homer by senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio). Juniors Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) and Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) led the Zips' offensive efforts with a pair of 2-for-4 performances. Both, Reinhart and Domer distributed a pair of singles, while Reinhart scored and Domer collected an RBI. Juniors Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) and Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.) added extra-base hits, each with a double, and Trevino scored a run.

Akron had one base runner in each of the first two innings as Reinhart drew a base on balls in the first inning and Tilly doubled in the second inning. The Zips left both runners on the bases and held the home team scoreless for the first two innings.

Kent State started the scoring in the third inning, opening the frame with a solo homerun by Ben Carew, his second homerun of the series. The Flashes pushed five more runs across the plate with five hits on a pair of doubles, two singles and a homerun, for a 6-0 advantage.

Akron responded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning as Reinhart opened the inning with a single to the right side and Regan blasted a homerun over the left field wall. It was Regan's second homerun of the series. The Zips did not allow a base runner in the bottom half of the inning and trailed 6-2 after four innings.

Domer placed the Zips' fourth hit of the game into right field, but couldn't cross the plate in the fifth inning as Kent State homered in the bottom of the inning for a 7-2 lead. In the sixth inning, Reinhart opened the frame with a single to center field, his second hit of the game, he advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) but, Akron did not score again until the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Zips scored one run on three hits as Trevino doubled to left field to start the inning and scored on a Domer single to center field. Junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) also singled in the inning, 7-3.
Akron left two runners on base in the eighth inning as Trevino drew a base on balls and junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) followed with a single to left field with two outs. The inning ended with a lineout to the shortstop by Domer, and Kent State added an insurance run for the 8-3 decision.

The Zips will be back in action on Friday-Sunday, May 7-10 against the Ohio Bobcats for the final #MACtion series of the season at Skeeles Field.
