AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's lacrosse team will be challenged by a pair of matches this week as the Zips host Delaware State on Tuesday, March 9, in a 5 p.m. contest at InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field, before resuming Mid-American Conference play in a 1 p.m. showdown at rival Kent State on Saturday, March 13.

CRYSTAL CLINIC ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER WAGON WHEEL CHALLENGE:
A half point in the 16-sport Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge will be on the line when Akron battles Kent State on Saturday, March 13. The rivalry series between the Zips and Golden Flashes is based on a time-honored competition for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Through 10 events this season, Zips lead the series, 4.0-3.5.

Since the 2011-12 academic year, the rivalry was broadened to include 16 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings. To learn more about the rivalry and follow the results and standings, visit:

A WEEK AGO:
Freshman Jacqueline Glassey (Kildeer, Ill.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal that propelled the University of Akron women's lacrosse team to an 12-11 triumph past Youngstown State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 MAC) in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools on Friday, March 5 at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.

Redshirt sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind) directed the Zips' offensive attack registering a team-high three goals on the afternoon. Redshirt freshman Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) turned in a two-goal afternoon, while Akron (2-1-0, 1-0-0 MAC) garnered one tally apiece from freshman Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), redshirt junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.), Glassey, redshirt freshmen Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) and freshman Madeline Shewbridge (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Freshman Ashley Lapp (Missouri City, Texas) notched 10 saves for the third consecutive contest for the Zips in net, while Elicia Wells pulled in 13 stops for the Penguins.
Akron posted a 40-34 edge in shots in the match, including a 25-21 margin in shots on goal.

Akron opened the match scoring the initial three goals on the strength of tallies from Kiefer, an own goal and the first of three goals on the day for Riggins.

Youngstown State fired back a salvo of their own netting a trio of goals to square the match at three at the 17:15 mark of the first half.

Kunttu put the Zips back ahead, 4-3, with a goal in the 22nd minute (21:45), before back-to-back scores from Vaudry gave the Penguins a 5-4 lead at halftime.

Akron opened the second half with scores from Boyd (2:58) and Kunttu (3:37) to regain the advantage, 6-5.

The two sides exchanged the next three goals before the Zips went ahead to stay on the first collegiate goal for Glassey at the 15:32 mark of the second half.

Akron extended its lead to 10-7 following goals from McMullen and Riggins in the 18th minute.

The Penguins continued to battle in their first match in program history cut the deficit to 10-9 with 7:47 left in regulation.

The Zips capitalized while playing a player down in the 24th minute (23:17) as Shewbridge netted a goal to give Akron a 11-10 lead.

Dennison capped the Zips' scoring efforts with a goal at the 24:39 mark.

SCOUTING DELAWARE STATE:
Delaware State is off to an 0-2 start to the campaign having dropped decisions at Old Dominion and Delaware to open the season. Sophomore Gwenna Gentle leads the Hornets in goals (4), points (4), shots (8) and shots on goal (6), while sophomore GK Moe Brown has recorded 26 saves in a pair of starts for Delaware State. The Hornets are led by second-year head coach Pamella Jenkins, who owns a 13-39 ledger in five years as a head coach.

SCOUTING KENT STATE:
Kent State is off to an 0-4 start to its campaign following a pair of setbacks versus Robert Morris and Cincinnati last week. Junior Abby Jones directs the Golden Flashes' offensive attack with team-high marks in goals (8), assists (2), points (10), shots (27) and shots on goal (18). Kent State has split the goalkeeping duties between sophomore Madison Flannigan and freshman Taylor Monturo, who have combined to collect 37 saves on the campaign. The Golden Flashes are led by third-year head coach Brianne Tierney, who owns a 25-50 ledger in six years as a head coach.
