Record-Setting Day Lifts Akron Past Delaware State, 18-5

AKRON, Ohio -Â On the strength of goals from seven different players, the University of Akron women's lacrosse team registered an 18-5 triumph past Delaware State (0-3) on Tuesday, March 9 at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.

As a team, Akron (3-1) established program singe-match records for goals (18), assists (6), points (24), shots (48), shots on goal (33) and ground balls (24).

Redshirt freshmen Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) scored a program-record six goals, while adding an assist in the victory, while freshman Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.) and freshman Madeline Shewbridge (Cincinnati, Ohio) adding four and three goals, respectively. Redshirt freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio), freshmen Jacqueline Glassey (Kildeer, Ill.) and Camille Patton (Canton, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind) added two, one, one and one goals, respectively.

Additionally, Glassey, Kiefer, redshirt freshman Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.), McMullen (2) and freshman Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) notched assists for Akron.

A trio of goalkeepers in freshman Ashley Lapp (Missouri City, Texas), redshirt freshmen Emma Henninge (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) saw action for the Zips, with Lerch recording a pair of second-half saves.

Akron posted a 48-12 edge in shots in the match, including a 33-7 margin in shots on goal.
After falling behind early in the match, 2-1, Akron collected four straight goals, including two from Shewbridge and one each off the sticks of Boyd and Kiefer to assume a 5-2 lead with 10:20 left before halftime.

The Hornets halted the scoring run with a tally at the 23:26 mark of the opening half before the Zips closed the stanza with goals from Kiefer, Boyd and McMullen to take an 8-3 advantage into the intermission.

Akron netted the first six goals of the second half to assume a 14-3 led with 22:10 left in the match before exiting the match with an 18-5 victory.

Akron is slated to travel to Kent, Ohio, for a 2 p.m. showdown as part of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge on Saturday, March 13, at Dix Stadium.
