AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's lacrosse team under the direction of second-year head coach Christy Mitchell opens its 2021 campaign hosting Gardner-Webb in a 3 p.m. match on Friday, Feb. 26, at InfoCision Stadium.
Due to current university COVID-19 protocols, family members and friends of the players and coaches, as well as fans, will not be allowed to attend on-campus events, including Akron women's lacrosse matches until further notice.

The University of Akron is following the Summit County Stay at Home Health Advisory issued by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County Health Commissioner Donna Skoda.
The University continues to work closely with state and local health officials on protocols for hosting events and make appropriate adjustments throughout the coming weeks. Please follow GoZips.com, the Akron Athletics app and all Zips' social media platforms for the most recent and up-to-date information.

The Zips return 10 starters from their inaugural season including redshirt junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.) and redshirt freshmen Julia Frombach (Avon, Ohio), Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.), Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.), Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) and Jenna Ridener (Cincinnati, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind) and redshirt freshmen Abby Schaefer (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and Kendall Sweeney (Shaker Heights, Ohio).

Dennison led the Zips in goals (8), shots (20) and shots on goal (15), while McMullen is Akron's top-returner in ground balls (16) and draws controlled (18).

Redshirt freshman Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) played in all seven matches in goal for the Zips, including four starts, and registered 64 saves.

Gardner-Webb is led by third-year head coach Jessie Aguglia, who owns a 13-13 record leading the Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb is off to a 1-0 start on the season having registered a 19-6 triumph past Wofford on Feb. 22. The Bulldogs garnered five, four, four and two goals, respectively, from junior Jada Preston, senior Talen Francis, redshirt junior Hannah Smith and senior Eilish Gately in the victory. Preston and Smith own team-high marks in shots (9) and shots on goal (7), while Francis directs the squad in assists (4). Freshman GK Kathleen Mackey recorded seven saves en route to notching the decision.

A year ago, Gardner-Webb posted a 5-3 ledger.

Akron is slated to travel to Loretto, Pa., to battle Saint Francis (Pa.) in a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, Feb. 28.
