Zips Continue MAC Play, Battle Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan

AKRON, Ohio-Â The University of Akron women's soccer team (2-10-0, 0-4-0 MAC) will continue conference play this week on the road against Central Michigan (5-5-0, 2-2-0 MAC) at 7 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich., followed by hosting Eastern Michigan (2-7-2, 1-2-1 MAC) on Sunday, Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. start at FirstEnergy Stadium. Sunday's game has been selected as the team's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
During warmups, the Zips will be wearing pink shirts to help increase awareness of the disease as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

SCOUTING AKRON:
Akron returns eight starters in 2021, including four of its top-five goal scorers led by junior Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio), who posted team-high marks in goals (3), points (8), shots (13) and game-winners (2). Tallying one goal each for the Zips was redshirt junior Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland), junior Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) and freshman Annabel Thomas (Canonsburg, Pa.). Sophomore GK Vanessa Berlin (Gau-Oderheim, Germany) returns for Akron after starting six games this past spring and recording 35 saves.

Akron enters Thursday's game 2-10-0 overall and 0-4-0 in MAC play after falling to Ball State, 3-1 Sunday. The Zips got on the board first as redshirt freshman Rielyn Hamilton (Burlington, Ky) scored her first collegiate goal at the 10:56 mark of the game on an assist from freshman Katie Stafford (Gahanna, Ohio). The Cardinals went on to score three second-half goals to clinch the victory.
Stafford paces the Zips this season in goals (3), points (7) and shots on goal (5), while Meaney leads the squad in shots (18) and shots on goal (7).  Freshman goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) has recorded 59 saves on the campaign.

Akron is led by seventh-year head coach Noreen Herlihy, who maintains a 33-71-14 ledger at the helm of the Zips' program, and a 283-184-44 mark in 27 campaigns overall as a head coach.

Central Michiganenters plays this Thursday, standing at 5-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in MAC play after securing a 1-0 overtime win over Western Michigan.

The Chippewas are led by redshirt freshman Gaelle Wells who paces the squad in goals (3) and points (6) while sophomore Jaelyn Dobrowolski leads the team with 25 shots, assists (4) and shots on goal (7). Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Lapoint has played in all games and has recorded 48 saves.

The Eagles are led by senior Lindsey Shira who paces the squad in goals (1), points (4), shots (17), and shots on goal (8). Â Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Abbotts has appeared in eight games and has registered 49 total saves.
