Zips Attack Early, but Can’t Hold off Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind.- Despite the Akron women's soccer team (2-10-0, 0-4-0 MAC) attacking in the first half, the Ball State Cardinals went on to score three goals in the second half and claim a 3-1 victory over the Zips on Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Although the Zips out-shot the Cardinals in the opening half, 7-6, Ball State slightly edged Akron in shots for the game, 17-12.
The Zips got on the board first as redshirt freshman Rielyn Hamilton (Burlington, Ky) scored her first collegiate goal at the 10:56 mark of the game on an assist from freshman Katie Stafford (Gahanna, Ohio).
The Cardinals evened the score at 1-1 when Chelsy Ralph scored a goal in the 61st minute (61:31) of the game. Nearly three minutes later, Ball State attacked again and took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Lexi Fraley. At the 65-minute mark (65:27), Fraley notched the brace for the Cardinals and put them up 3-1 and secure the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) registered eight saves in the game.
Akron will be back on the road on Thursday, Oct. 7 as the Zips travel to Central Michigan for a 7 p.m. game. On Sunday, Oct. 10, the Zips will return home and host Eastern Michigan for a 1 p.m. game.
