HUNTINGTON, W. Va.– In its first midweek softball action of the 2020 season, the Akron softball team could not overcome a high-powered Marshall offense as the Zips dropped a pair of decisions to the Thundering Herd.Â
Â
The Zips managed to push three runs across the plate in the game one, but couldn't stop the Thundering Herds offense falling 8-3.Â
Â
Akron's offense tallied six hits in the contest that included at least one hit from redshirt Sydney Jascoe (1-for-3, 1 run), junior Lauren Holdsworth (1-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB), freshman Laurel Devoe (1-for-3, 1 RBI), senior Macky Mitchiner (1-for-3), and senior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) who notched a team-high two hits going 2-for-2 with a RBI and run scored.Â
Â
On the rubber, sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) made her team-high eighth start for Akron. In 5.2 innings of work, Petrof allowed eight runs on nine hits, forced 10 flyouts, and five groundouts.Â
Â
With one swing of the bat in the top of the third inning, Malik cut into the Thundering Herds lead, 2-1, clobbering a home run over the fence in centerfield. The four-bagger was the first of the season for Malik.Â
Â
Akron wrapped up its scoring efforts in the top half of the sixth inning. After Jascoe doubled to left-center field, Holdsworth singled to left field driving home Jascoe. Holdsworth who advanced to second on the throw after her single, sophomore Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) entered the ball game to pinch run. The speedy Cadmus darted home off the crack of the bat when Devoe singled to left-center field.
Â
The Zips were limited to just two hits from freshmen Bailey Drapola (Brookfield, Ohio) and Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) in the second game of the twinbill as Akron was blanked 8-0.Â
Â
Senior Adrian Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Lauren Frigyes (Paris, Ohio) split duties inside the circle giving up a combined nine hits and eight runs while striking out a pair.Â
Â
Akron returns to tournament action this weekend as the Zips head down to Kentucky to take part in the Eastern Kentucky invitational on March. 7-8. Akron is scheduled for four contests squaring off against Eastern Kentucky, UIC, and Dayton.
