MERCER, Ga.– On day one of the Mercer Tournament at Sikes Field in Mercer, Ga., the Akron softball team fell in a pair of contests to host, Mercer, and Presbyterian College on Friday evening.Â
Â
After rain in the Mercer area forced the Zips to play later in the evening, Akron began the day dropping a 13-2 decision to the Bears.Â
Â
The Zips offense came in the top of the fifth inning after freshman Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) launched her second home run of the season. With two outs and sophomore Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) standing on first, Bryant lifted the first pitch she saw to straight away center for a two-run shot.Â
Â
Stevens tallied a team-high two hits going 2-for-3, a home run, and two RBI. Freshman Bailey Drapola (Brookfield, Ohio) and senior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) all recorded one hit in the ball game.Â
Â
Sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) surrendered 10 hits and 10 runs while making her fourth start of the season.Â
Â
Two late-game home runs for Presbyterian College handed the Blue Hose a narrow 3-1 win over the Zips.Â
Â
After Presbyterian College got on the board in the top of the first inning, Akron countered in their first at-bats as Drapola ripped a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field.Â
Â
The Zips and Blue Hose found themselves in a pitching duel in the second, third, and fourth inning. Adrian Smith (St. Clairsville, ohio) for Akron and Jenna Greene for Presbyterian faced the minimum in the second and third inning while striking out a combined nine batters.Â
Â
Both offense started gaining some rhythm heading into the second half of the contest before the Blue Hose homered in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead and homered in the sixth to extend its advantage to 3-1.Â
Â
Smith tossed her fifth complete game of the season going 7.0 innings. The righty allowed just three runs on three hits and struck out a season-high 10 hitter's.Â
Â
The Mercer Tournament continues on Saturday, Feb. 22, as the Zips go head-to-head against Georgia State at 2:30 p.m. from Sikes Field.Â
