BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – It was a rough opening weekend for Akron lacrosse who suffered a loss in both of its inaugural games, losing the latter of the two to Gardner-Webb, 18-5, on Sunday afternoon.Â

With the loss, the Zips fall to 0-2 while Gardner-Webb improves to 2-2.Â

Leading the charge for Akron were Junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.) and freshman Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) who finished the game with two goals a-piece. Freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) added the other goal.Â

Defensively, freshman Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) led the team in ground balls with five while sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind.) added four. In goal, freshman Falon Costigan (Huntersville, N.C.) got the start for the Zips, totaling nine saves.Â

The Zips found themselves down early, as two goals in the first five minutes for Gardner-Webb gave it the lead, 2-0. After another of pair of goals made the score 4-0, Dennison put the Zips on the board with a goal at the 13:37 mark of the first half.Â

The Zips failed to score again in the half, trailing 9-1 heading into the second half.Â
Â
Akron gained a bit of momentum early in the second half, as goals by Kunttu and McMullen within the first three minutes of the half cut the deficit to six, 9-3.Â
Â
The Zips were held scoreless for the next 10 minutes until Dennison netted her second goal of the game on a free-position attempt, making the score 14-4.  Less than five minutes later, Kunttu netted Akron's fifth and final goal of the game.Â

Gardner-Webb went on to score three more goals en route to an 18-5 victory.

The Zips will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 21 as they'll head to Moon Township, Pa. to take on Robert Morris.
