AKRON, Ohio– On a night where the Akron women's soccer team honored senior Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on senior night, the Zips were able to reward her with a memorable victory as Akron defeated Robert Morris, 1-0, to close out non-conference play at FirstEnergy Stadium Thursday night.
At the 38:31 mark of the first half, Akron earned a free-kick following a foul called on RMU. Junior Ryley Watt (Irwin, Pa.) booted the ball in play and into the box. Sophomore Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) made a play on the ball and sent a header on goal. However, in an attempt to clear the ball out of harms way, the ball skimmed off the leg of a Colonial defender, altered the path of the ball, and bounced into the corner of the net resulting in an own goal but a 1-0 advantage for the Zips.
That goal in the 39' proved to be all Akron would need to secure its third victory of the season and head into Mid-American Conference play at 3-5-0.
Akron dominated possession throughout the contest and won the battle on the offensive end. Following the 90 minutes, Akron outshot Robert Morris, 15-to-6, including a 6-to-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Individually, a season-high seven Akron players registered a shot in the contest. UA was led by Pcholinsky and Amato as the duo tallied four shots each (eight total) and four shots on goal combined. Redshirt sophomore Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) pitched in three shots while four other Zips posted one shot attempt in the match.
In goal, freshman Libby Harper (Hatfield, England) picked up her second career shutout. Harper did not make a save in the contest while the Colonials lone shot on goal was turned away by defender Lucia Lobato (Galway, Ireland).
The Zips and RMU spent a majority of the initial 45 minutes of play on the Akron side of the field and inside the UA's offensive third en route to an 8-to-3 advantage in shots in favor of Akron.
On a day dedicated to Amato, she fired the first two shots in the contest that were each pulled in for a save.
Following the goal, Akron continued to push the ball forward in an attempt to increase its lead, however, Meany and Amato's shots before the end of the half missed high over the mark.
Akron's defense shut the door on Robert Morris in the second half and made it difficult for the Colonials to get a clean look at the net resulting in the second clean sheet of the season.
Are you ready for some MACtion? Ready or not, it's here. The non-conference portion of the schedule has come and gone, and the Akron women's soccer team has its sights set on the 2019 Mid-American Conference schedule.
