BOWLING GREEN, Ohio– On the night of the 2019 Mid-American Conference season opener, the Akron women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the defending MAC Champion, Bowling Green, but fell to the Falcons, 1-0, on Friday night at Cochrane Field.
"Bowling Green is a quality team. We were well organized in the first half and really limited them to shots from distances so it was disappointing to concede right before the half on a counter," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "We did much better in the second half especially in possession and so we can take some positives from it for sure. We are proud of the effort displayed tonight. Now we regroup and get ready to play again Sunday."
The Zips offense totaled four shots in the affair, including a pair in the first half and a pair in the second half. Individually, redshirt freshman Charley Kale (Sylvania, Ohio) paced the Akron offense with two shots including one on goal. Following Kale in the shot category was junior Annamarie Alfery (Cheswick, Pa.) and freshman Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) chipped in one shot each.
In the net for the Zips, freshman Libby Harper (Hatfield, England) made her third consecutive start anchoring the defense and went on to make three saves, all of which came in the first half.
Akron and Bowling Green played a near scoreless match in the first half before the Falcons got on the scoreboard with three minutes remaining (41:54) in the stanza.
The Zips registered two shots in the first 45 minutes of the contest. Shot number one came off the foot of Meaney at the 26:41 mark but the attempt was blocked by a Falcon defender. UA's final shot of the period came with 15 ticks on the clock by Kale but her shot from distance was pulled in for a save.
In the second half of the match, Akron's defense stepped up and limited BGSU to just five shots and off the scoreboard to limit the damage.
As Akron attempted to tie the game up at one, Alfery's second-half shot attempt sailed high and Kale's second shot of the evening was blocked by Falcon defender.
UA continues the first weekend of Mid-American Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 29, when the Zips visit the 2017 MAC Champion, Toledo, at 1 p.m.
