MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.– The University of Akron softball team competed in day one of the Madeira Beach Tournament and saw the Zips pick up their third win of the 2019 season behind the strength of junior Adrian Smith's (St. Clairsville, Ohio) second complete game of the season inside the circle on Friday morning.Â
Â
Akron defeated Drexel, 8-4, in round one of the tournament before falling to Belmont, 10-2, in the Zips second contest of the afternoon.Â
Â
Smith's second complete game of the year earned her third victory of the campaign and improved the righty's record to 3-0. In a season-high seven innings, Smith gave up eight hits, surrendered four runs, struck out four and walked three. Smith recorded 11 fly outs and nine groundball outs in the contest.Â
Â
The Zips offense tallied 10 hits against the Dragons which included junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) and junior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) each finishing with two hits (4-for-7), to go along with a combined three runs and two RBI. Six other Zips notched at least one hit in the ballgame.Â
Â
Akron struck first in the contest against the Dragons in the bottom of the first inning putting three runs on the scoreboard. With two outs in the inning, redshirt sophomore Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) began a two-out rally for the Zips with a walk. The Zips third baseman stole second and was driven home on an RBI single by sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio). In the next at-bat, Malik lifted her first career home run in an Akron uniform to deep centerfield for a two-run home run and a three-run lead.Â
Â
A minimum of two runs were scored by at least one team in innings 3-5.Â
Â
Drexel cut into Akron's lead, 3-2, in the top half of the third inning. The Zips responded with a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of junior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) and an error by the Dragons that allowed junior Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.) to score from third. In the top of the fifth inning, Drexel again posted two runs to trim the deficit back to one, 5-4.Â
Â
With Akron already out in front heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Zips added three insurance runs to pull away with the contest. Redshirt senior Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded an RBI single to centerfield and Jascoe brought home a pair of RBI with a bases-clearing double.Â
Â
Smith then closed the door on her third win of the season shutting down the dragons in the seventh inning.Â
Â
Game two between Akron and Belmont was dominated by the Bruins who ended the contest in just five innings.Â
Â
The Bruins scored four runs in the first, one in the third inning, and a game-high five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Akron was able to get some offense going in the third inning against Belmont and scored the Zips lone two runs of the contest. Junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) singled down the right field line to lead off the Zips at-bats. In the next plate appearance, Mitchiner singled to right field and Holzman moved over to third. Rodriguez then reached base safely on a Bruin error that brought home both Holzman and Mitchiner.Â
Â
The Zips recorded three hits in the ballgame by Jascoe, Mitchiner, and Holzman.Â
Â
Akron returns to action at the Madeira Beach Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16. The Zips go head-to-head with Holy Cross at 4:30 p.m. and Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
