AKRON, Ohio – On a night where senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) established a school-record mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to win the men's long jump, it was senior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) that stole the show for the Akron track and field team garnering a world-leading and career-best mark of 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the men's pole vault directing the Zips to a pair of dual-meet victories past Kent State in the annual Akron-Kent State dual on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The Zips combined to win 15 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 16 to best their rival in the men's and women's competitions, respectively.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered Kent State, 78-72, while the Zips' women's squad edged the Golden Flashes, 79-72.
Latimer unleashed a career-best mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to set a school record in the men's long jump with the fifth-best performance in the NCAA this season to better senior teammate Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio), who posted a mark of 25-2.75 (7.69m) to place second.
A week after posting the No. 2 mark in the world in the men's pole vault, Ludwig elevated his game another level eclipsing 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the event with the No. 1 bar in the world in 2019. He attempted to establish a new collegiate record height of 19-5 (5.92m), but came up short in each of his three attempts to better a mark set by former Zip Shawn Barber in 2015. Ludwig's mark stands as the No. 3 all-time indoor collegiate jump.
Redshirt sophomore Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) crossed the line first in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.01, the third-fastest time in indoor program history.
Freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio) registered the fifth-fastest time in indoor program history in the women's 60-meter hurdles crossing the line first in 8.52.
Akron also garnered men's victories by redshirt sophomore Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the mile (4:11.77), freshman Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 400 meters (48.69), sophomore Steven Ashcraft (Canton, Ohio) in the 800 meters (1:54.98) and senior Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) in the high jump (6-11.50/2.12m).
