Zips’ Track and Field Set to Host 15th Annual Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron track and field team will welcome 19 teams to the Stile Athletics Field House this weekend for the 15th Annual Akron Invitational beginning on Thursday, Jan. 31 and running through Saturday, Feb. 2.
UP NEXT: The three-day meet will commence at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 with the women's and men's Gold Division discus competition. The meet will continue on Friday, Feb. 1 with the Blue Division men's and women's pole vault and men's long jump at 4 p.m. before running events, including the community mile, get underway at 8 p.m.
The final day of the meet commences with action being split between a morning and afternoon session. Action in the Blue Division commences at 10 a.m. and runs through approximately 1 p.m.
The showcase of the meet will be Saturday's Gold Invitational, which begins with a host of field events at 3 p.m. and continues with final heats on the track throughout the afternoon. The final race, the men's and women's 4x400 relay is scheduled to start at 5:40 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door for $10 (cash only). Akron students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. All fans should enter through the Akron student recreation center main entrance, except on Thursday when they should enter via the main Field House entrance off of Union Street. A separate ticket is required for both the Friday and/or Saturday sessions, but tickets purchased for Saturday grants admission to both the Blue Section and Gold Invitational. Doors will open to the public at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. Admission is free on Thursday.
The Zips will go against a 19-team field which includes; Akron, Ashland (M/F), Buffalo (M/F), Cleveland State (F), Dayton (M/F), Findlay (M/F), Indiana Tech (M/F), Kent State (M/F), Malone (M/F), Marshall (M/F), Mount St. Mary's (M/F), Northern Kentucky (M/F), Ohio (F), Penn (M/F), Purdue Fort Wayne (M/F), Saint Francis (Pa.) (M/F), Walsh (F), West Virginia (F) and Xavier (M/F).

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron men's track and field squad moved up 10 spots to No. 22 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field National Rating Index released this week.
The Zips' men's squad held a firm grasp on the No. 5 spot in the most-current Great Lakes Regional ratings for a second-straight week, while the women's team moved up two spots to check-in at No. 8.
The Zips are the top-rated Mid-American Conference team ranked in the men's national poll.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN LATEST TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron currently has six student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including senior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), who is leading the nation in the men's pole vault (19-1.50/5.83m).
Also rated among the top-25 is senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (sixth in men's long jump – 26-0/7.92m), junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) (seventh in women's pole vault – 14-2.25/4.33m), senior Eboni Hall (Pickerington, Ohio) (15th in women's pole vault – 13-9.25/4.20m), senior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) (16th in men's long jump – 25-2.75/7.69m) and senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) (19th in women's mile – 4:40.13).
The Akron men's and women's teams are ranked No. 8 and No. 17, respectively, in the latest Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips garnered a school record a week ago as part of four overall top-five program marks.
Jordan Latimer established an indoor program record mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to earn the victory in the men's long jump at the Akron-Kent State Dual on Jan. 25.
Equally impressive in the men's pole vault was Matt Ludwig, who turned in the then highest jump in the world in 2019 eclipsing 19-1.50 (5.83m) to claim the title in the men's pole vault.
Redshirt sophomore Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) crossed the line first in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.01, the third-fastest time in indoor program history, while freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio) registered the fifth-fastest time in indoor program history in the women's 60-meter hurdles crossing the line first in 8.52.
A WEEK AGO: On a night where Jordan Latimer established a school-record mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to win the men's long jump, it was Matt Ludwig that stole the show for the Akron track and field team garnering a world-leading and career-best mark of 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the men's pole vault directing the Zips to a pair of dual-meet victories past Kent State in the annual Akron-Kent State dual on Jan. 25, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The Zips combined to win 15 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 16 to best their rival in the men's and women's competitions, respectively.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered Kent State, 78-72, while the Zips' women's squad edged the Golden Flashes, 79-72.
Latimer unleashed a career-best mark of 26-0 (7.92m) to set a school record in the men's long jump with the sixth-best performance in the NCAA this season to better teammate Terrell McClain, who posted a mark of 25-2.75 (7.69m) to place second.
A week after posting the No. 2 mark in the world in the men's pole vault, Ludwig elevated his game another level eclipsing 19-1.50 (5.83m) to win the event with the No. 1 bar in the world in 2019. He attempted to establish a new collegiate record height of 19-5 (5.92m), but came up short in each of his three attempts to better a mark set by former Zip Shawn Barber in 2015. Ludwig's mark stands as the No. 3 all-time indoor collegiate jump.
Patrick Kimball crossed the line first in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.01, the third-fastest time in indoor program history.

Akron also garnered men's victories by redshirt sophomore Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the mile (4:11.77), freshman Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 400 meters (48.69), sophomore Steven Ashcraft (Canton, Ohio) in the 800 meters (1:54.98) and senior Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) in the high jump (6-11.50/2.12m).
Taking titles in the women's field for the Zips were sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) in the mile (4:59.45), Mackenzie Andrews in the 800 meters (2:10.09), junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio) in the 3,000 meters (10:07.49), junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) in the pole vault (14-2.50/4.33m), senior Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio) in the weight throw (60-5.25/18.42m), redshirt junior Maike Anstett (Karlsruhe, Germany) in the triple jump (38-11.50/11.87m) and the 4x400 relay team of freshman Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Andrews, junior Iman Batiste (Dublin, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Dimitra Gnafaki (Chania, Greece) (3:52.27).
A YEAR AGO: Lucy Bryan highlighted an impressive weekend for the University of Akron track and field squads as her school-record jump in the women's pole vault directed the Zips' performances on the final day of the 14th Annual Akron Invitational on Feb. 3, 2018, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
Akron concluded the weekend establishing a pair of school-record marks courtesy of Bryan and Jackie Siefring, while earning 11 victories and 42 top-five finishes.
Bryan broke the school record in the women's pole vault surpassing 14-8 (4.47m) to better the previous standard of 14-7.25 set by 2014 NCAA outdoor pole vault champion Annika Roloff on March 14, 2014.
Jordan Latimer soared 25-7.50 (7.81m) to place second in the men's long jump.
Winning the women's 800 meters with a career-best time of 2:08.34 was Mackenzie Andrews. Her performance stands as the fourth-fastest time in Akron indoor program history.
Phil Jagers registered a career-best mark of 64-8 (19.71m) to claim victory in the men's weight throw. His effort stands as the fourth-longest throw in indoor program history.
Senior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) established a then career-best mark in the women's shot put to win the event with a throw of 50-7.50 (15.43m).
Matt Ludwig won the men's pole vault competition eclipsing 18-4.50 (5.60m).
Redshirt junior Preston Fillman (Hanoverton, Ohio) was the Zips' top finisher in the men's heptathlon registering a career-best seven-event cumulative score of 4,960.
Taron Slone posted times of 21.44 and 6.85 to place second and fifth, respectively, in the men's 200 and 60 meters.
Garrett Crichlow finished second in the mile recording a time of 4:08.85.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Patrick Kimball and junior Elijah Johnson (Fremont, Ohio) earned second- and fourth-place showings.
Senior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio) registered a mark of 52-8.75 (16.07m) to finish third in the men's shot put.
Ariadna Ramos Gandia placed second in the women's triple jump soaring 41-1.50 (12.53m).
The Zips posted 20 personal-best marks in morning competition in the Blue Division en route to five top-five performances.
AKRON DUO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: University of Akron track and field redshirt sophomore Patrick Kimball and Matt Ludwig were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
LUDWIG NAMED AKRON SUMMA HEALTH STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: On the strength of turning in the then highest jump in the world in 2019 eclipsing 19-1.50 (5.83m) to claim the title in the men's pole vault at the Akron-Kent State Dual, senior Matt Ludwig was chosen as the Akron Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week.
