AKRON, Ohio -- The Miami offense took charge of day two of the three-game series and scored a combined 27 runs to lead to a pair of victories over Akron, 16-5 and 11-3, to claim the series win over the Zips on Saturday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.Â
In game one of the afternoon, 11 combined runs were scored between Akron and Miami with the advantage going to the RedHawks, 7-4.
After trailing 7-0 after the first half inning, the Zips countered the Miami offensive attack with four runs of their own. The four-run rally all started when redshirt freshman Sydney Jascoe lifted a deep fly ball over the left field fence for a lead-off home run. Four straight singles by senior Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio), redshirt junior Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nevada), senior Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio), and junior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) scored two more runs after Gambone's single up the middle and Crews single to left scored Gillespie and Rodriguez. In the next at-bat, Crews created a diversion on the basepath which allowed Gambone to steal home.Â
Miami increased its lead to plus-five with two more runs in the second inning.Â
Crews recorded her second hit of the contest with a one-out double to left-center field, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when junior Maddy Clowdus (Eastvale, Calif.) reached safely on an error.Â
The RedHawks proceeded to put the game away with seven more runs in the fifth (3) and sixth (4) inning, which ended the game early due to the NCAA run rule.Â
Akron garnered nine hits in the contest with Rodriguez, Crews, and freshman Kayla Kmett (San Clemente, Calif.) each recording two hits in the ballgame.Â
Game two of the afternoon was again dominated by the Miami bats.Â
After Kmett set down the RedHawks 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning, Akron claimed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rodriguez ripped a double to right-center field and scored on Gambone's second RBI single of the day, again back up the middle.Â
Miami continued to be aggressive at the plate and exploded for nine runs in the second inning.Â
The Akron offense was limited to just one base runner in both the third and fourth inning when Kmett walked in the fourth.Â
The RedHawks added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning to push their lead to plus-10 (11-1).Â
With Akron down to their possible last at-bat of the day, Gillespie trimmed the lead to 11-3 with one out in the fifth. In what turned out to be her final at-bat at Lee R. Jackson Field, Gillespie launched an opposite field two-run home run to right center field, her second in as many days. However, Akron could not complete the come-back and the contest ended after five innings of play.Â
Akron closes out the regular season next weekend, May 4-5, when the Zips travel to Kent State for another part of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.Â
