BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In the final road contest of the 2017-18 season, a strong offensive performance by Bowling Green earned the Falcons an 84-63 win over the University of Akron women's basketball team Wednesday night at the Stroh Center. Â

Leading the way for Akron offensively was sophomore forward Haliegh Reinoehl (Westfield, Ind.) scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Junior Fredniqua Walker (Cleveland, Ohio) scored eight points in back-to-back contests matching her career-high in points, while sophomore guard Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in eight points, three steals, and an assist.

As a team, Akron shot 29.7-percent (19-of-64) from the floor for the contest while shooting a low 18.5 percent (5-for-27) from long distance. As Akron struggled to find any kind of offensive rhythm, Bowling Green flourished and shot 44.1-percent (30-for-68) from the field and 38.7-percent (12-of-31) from beyond the arc.

Shooting woes continued for the Zips in their final road contest of the regular season as Akron shot 29.6 percent from the field in the first half of the contest making four field goals in each of the first two quarters.

Akron shot 0-for-9 from the floor and 0-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first 6:15 of the ballgame. The Zips got on the board at the 3:47 mark when Reinoehl and sophomore Alyssa Clay (Indianapolis, Ind.) drilled back-to-back triples cutting the deficit to six points, 12-6.

While Akron ended the first period shooting 30-percent, Bowling shot an efficient 52.9-percent (9-for-17) en route to claiming a 25-14 lead after the initial stanza. The Zips faults turned into the Falcons success as BG scored 12 points off six Akron turnovers in the first quarter alone.

The Falcons did not hault its offensive push as Bowling Green extended its lead to plus-14 (39-25) heading into the lockerrrom following a 14-11 second quarter advantage over the Zips.

Akron's reserves came off the bench and tallied 13 first-half points with freshman Destiny Perkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Reinoehl pitching in five points each to lead the way for Akron, while Caitlin Vari (Richfield, Ohio) reeled in seven boards in the first 20 minutes.

After trailing by 15 points at the halftime break, Bowling Green did not turn down the pressure offensively and opened up the second half with a 9-0 run to grow its lead to plus-23 (48-25).

The Zips best offensive spurt of the game started at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter scoring eight unanswered points. Freshman Sarah Leyendecker (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) tallied four points, while Vari and sophomore Shayna Harmon (Ashville, Ohio) each scored a pair.

However, the Falcons came right back with a 12-2 run which negated Akron's eight points and extended the lead back to 61-35.

From that point on, Bowling Green was in control of the contest the rest of the way with their lead never diminishing below 18 points to close out the game.

The 2017-18 regular season comes to a close this Saturday, March 3, when Akron hosts the Bobcats from Ohio University on senior day. Prior to the 2 p.m. tip-off at James A. Rhodes Arena, the Zips will honor its three seniors for all of their accomplishment's in an Akron uniform.
