BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green connected on a season-high 15 three pointers en route to dealing the University of Akron women's basketball team an 86-50 setback on Saturday, Feb 4, at the Stroh Center.
The Falcons (6-16, 2-8 MAC) shot nearly 54 percent (.536) from beyond the arc in the game and 44.8 percent overall, while limiting the Zips (9-12, 2-8 MAC) to a 32.8 percent shooting mark en route to earning the victory.
Redshirt sophomore Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) led Akron with a team-high 14 points, including make four triples. Carly Santoro directed three Bowling Green players scoring in double figures with a game-high 16 points. Also surpassing the double-digit scoring plateau for the Falcons was Sydney Lambert and Caterrion Thompson with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Bowling Green posted a 48-32 advantage in rebounding on the afternoon, including 34-24 on the defensive glass and capitalized on the margin with an 18-6 difference in second-chance points. Freshman Haliegh Reinoehl (Westfield, Ind.) pulled down a team-best seven rebounds for Akron.
The Zips jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the affair before the Falcons delivered seven unanswered tallies to assume a 10-5 lead at the first media timeout.
A beautiful deflection and mid-court steal by freshman Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.) resulted in a fast-break lay-up to end the scoring run.
The two teams exchanged the next four baskets before the Falcons closed the stanza outscoring Akron, 5-2, to lead, 20-15, after one period.
Bowling Green opened the second quarter scoring the first five points to extend its margin to 12, 25-13.
A basket from Reinoehl ended the run before the hot-shooting Falcons finished the half outscoring the Zips, 12-2, to take a 37-20 lead into the intermission.
Akron connected on 31 percent of its first-half shots, while Bowling Green shot 38.2 percent from the floor, including making six three-pointers. The Falcons were able to stretch their margin thanks to a 27-15 margin in rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Bowling Green came out of the gates to begin the third quarter outpacing the Zips, 14-2, to take a 51-22 lead with 5:52 remaining in the period.
The Falcons completed the quarter outscoring Akron, 33-14, on the strength of seven three pointers, to take a 70-34 lead into the final period.
The deficit proved too much for the Zips to overcome in the final period as Bowling Green captured the victory.
Akron returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with a 7 p.m. tilt at Miami University.
