ATHENS, Ohio – Displaying why it was tabbed to win the Mid-American Conference this season, Ohio (16-3, 8-0 MAC) connected on nearly 40 percent (.397) of its shots, including 14 three pointers, and limited Akron (10-9, 4-4 MAC) to a season-low 27.4 percent shooting mark, en route to notching a 75-55 victory past the Zips on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
Senior Anita Brown (Warren, Ohio) registered a game-high 16 points for Akron, while senior DiAndra Gibson (Ravenna, Ohio) and sophomore Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) added 13 and nine points, respectively. Kiyanna Black directed four Bobcats scoring in double figures with a team-high 15 points.
Ohio outrebounded the Zips in the affair, 53-44, including edging Akron on the defensive glass, 38-27. Gibson garnered her third double-double of the season pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Brown corralled eight rebounds of her own.
Contributing seven and six tallies off the bench for the Zips was junior Alex Ricketts (Mercer, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio).
The Bobcats parlayed a trio of three pointers to an early 11-3 lead at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter as the Zips made just one of their first nine shots from the floor.
Akron battled back to cut the deficit to 11-8 after a lay-up by Brown and a triple from Gibson with 3:10 left in the quarter, but trailed at the end of the period, 17-12.
The Zips struggled offensively to begin the second quarter as Akron missed its first 16 shots from the field before Brown ended the drought making a lay-up with 1:35 left in the half.
She later added a three pointer, but the Bobcats outscored the Zips in the second quarter, 22-7, to take a 39-19 lead into the intermission.
Akron shot just 19.4 percent from the floor in the initial 20 minutes of the game, while Ohio connected at a 40.6-percent clip.
Brown led the Zips with nine first-half points, while Kelly Karlis paced the Bobcats with 11 points.
Akron opened the second half with a 7-3 run with all seven points coming from Burry.
The Zips kept fighting and whittled the deficit to 13, 56-43, on back-to-back three pointers by Sefcik at the 8:02 and 7:54 marks of the fourth quarter.
Ohio made its shots down the stretch and exited with a 75-55 victory over the Zips.
