Brown Directs Akron to a 71-55 Victory at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Anita Brown (Warren, Ohio) led four Akron (8-7, 2-2 MAC) players scoring in double figures with a 23-point, seven-rebound performance, to spark the Zips to only their second-ever triumph at Bowling Green (5-8, 1-3 MAC), 71-55, on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Joining Brown with double-digit scoring efforts for Akron was junior Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio), senior DiAndra Gibson (Ravenna, Ohio) and sophomore Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) with 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively. Miriam Justinger recorded a team-high 20 points to direct the Falcons' offensive exploits on the evening.
The Zips finished the affair shooting 41.2 percent from the floor and limited Bowling Green to a 27.6 percent mark from the field.
Rebounds were nearly even in the contest with Akron bettering the Falcons on the boards, 46-44. Burry pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Zips to record her third double double of the season.
Akron dominated in the paint in the affair outscoring Bowling Green, 40-16, while senior Megan Barilla (Fairview Park, Ohio) dished out a game-high five assists for the Zips.
The victory marked the 150th at Akron for Zips' head coach Jodi Kest.
Akron jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the contest on the strength of five points from Brown and led at the initial media timeout, 9-7.
The Zips closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead after one period, 18-9. Brown posted nine first-quarter points for Akron.
The Zips began the second quarter with a 7-2 run sparked by four points from Burry to assume a 25-11 lead at the 5:53 mark.
After five unanswered tallies from the Falcons, Akron parlayed a 9-3 scoring spurt to lead at halftime, 36-21.
Plybon directed the Zips with 10 first-half points, while Brown and Gibson added nine and seven tallies, respectively.
Akron connected at a 37.5-percent clip in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Bowling Green to a 24.2 percent shooting mark.
After exchanging baskets to open the second half, the Zips used a 7-0 run gain their biggest lead up that point in the affair, 52-29, after a lay-up by Brown at the 5:47 mark.
Akron was held without a field goal over the next 4:55 as Bowling Green scored six straight before a Brown lay-up with 52 seconds left in the third quarter ended the scoring drought.
The Zips led after three quarters, 56-37, with Brown scoring 12 of Akron's 20 third-quarter points.
Each side connected on only three field goals in the final stanza, but Plybon was 5-of-6 at the free throw line over the final 10 minutes to seal the 71-55 victory for Akron.
The Zips return to action traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., to square off against Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 16. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
